Why a palette, not a color

One nice color is not yet a brand

A Sinh Vũ working rule: brand color is a set with clear roles, one job per color, and it has to hold up both in print and on screen.

  • One job per color

The main color is what people remember, supporting colors split areas and carry backgrounds, and the accent is used sparingly for buttons, prices and anything that needs attention. When four colors fight for space, none of them is remembered.

  • Suit your element, but not only that

Many Vietnamese business owners want colors that suit their element. Each element matches several colors, so you can still pick one among them that fits the industry, reads well and prints cleanly.

  • Follow the industry or stand apart

Many industries have familiar colors: clinics lean blue, restaurants lean red and orange. Following them tells people at once what you sell; standing apart makes you easier to spot. Either works, as long as it is a deliberate choice.

Questions

What people often ask

Three questions Sinh Vũ often gets about this tool.

Whose birth year should I use?

Usually the owner's. When a business has several owners, people often use the founding date instead. The tool works with the lunar year: a date before Lunar New Year belongs to the previous lunar year.

How are the element colors decided?

By the Nạp Âm system of the five elements, the common way in Vietnam to read an element from a birth year. Suitable colors are those of your own element and of the element that feeds it; colors to avoid are those of the element that overcomes it. This is folk belief, offered for reference, not a design rule.

Why does the suggestion differ from the color I typed?

If you enter a color, the tool keeps that exact code as the main color. Only in industries where brands tend to stand apart from the familiar colors, when your color falls right in that familiar range, the tool suggests the neighbouring hue and says why. Dragging on the color pad changes the color as you move it.

Can I use these color codes for printing?

HEX codes, the six-character color codes used on screens, are for screens only. The CMYK codes here (the four printing inks: cyan, magenta, yellow, black) are only a rough idea, not codes to print with. That is because the tool converts HEX to CMYK directly, not through the conversion table of a specific printer and paper. Give your printer the HEX code so they know the color you want, then ask for a proof on the actual paper. The main color is best fixed with a special mixed ink (a Pantone color, the standard color reference printers share).

Is the birth date I enter sent anywhere?

No. The element is worked out in your own browser. Only when you choose to send the palette to Sinh Vũ are the color codes sent along; the date is not.
