Green packaging materials: selection map and discipline to avoid greenwashing

Before printing the words 'biodegradable' on packaging, you need to understand three concepts that cannot be used interchangeably, and check if the target market infrastructure can actually process that material.

Not every brown packaging, leaf-printed, or labeled "biodegradable" is truly green packaging. The sustainability story only holds value when it can withstand the question: how is this material processed, where, and does the target market have the infrastructure to do so? This page serves as a map for you to navigate before selecting materials and before writing any green claims on packaging.

What are green packaging materials?

This is a general group of materials focused on sustainability, divided into three main branches.

Branch one is post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR): plastic made from collected sources after consumers have used it, not virgin plastic. The advantage is a reduced environmental footprint and a clear circular story. Limitations: the base color may not be as uniform as virgin plastic, and color matching on actual materials is needed before committing to print.

Branch two is biodegradable plastics and materials: typically PLA (polylactic acid, made from fermented plant starch, commonly corn or sugarcane). PLA looks like regular plastic but requires industrial composting conditions to decompose; it does not break down in household trash or landfills.

Branch three is plant-based materials replacing plastic: typically bagasse, made from pressed sugarcane pulp, naturally insulating, sturdy, and compostable under suitable conditions. Usually does not require an additional synthetic liner.

Three concepts that you need to clearly distinguish before doing anything:

  • Compostable: requires standard composting conditions, usually industrial composting at high temperatures. There are specific standards for home composting, which are stricter.
  • Recyclable: collected and mechanically or chemically recycled, a process completely different from composting.
  • Biodegradable: describes the ability of microorganisms to decompose, but does not specify conditions or timelines. Should not be used independently as a sufficient statement.

Mixing these three concepts is a common communication error and the source of most greenwashing cases in the packaging industry.

When to choose, when not to

Green materials are not the default choice for every brand wanting to appear responsible. The decision should be based on three factors: brand positioning, target market, and the actual end-of-life processing infrastructure at the point of sale.

  • Suitable when: the brand positions itself as sustainable and needs a credible green story, not just superficial.
  • Suitable when: exporting goods to environmentally conscious markets, especially Europe, where buyers and regulations require specific certifications.
  • Suitable when: cosmetics or food products want to reduce the environmental footprint of packaging and are ready to invest in material testing.
  • No compatibility when: You want to label it green without real certification, as the risk of false green claims is very high.
  • No compatibility when: The collection and composting infrastructure in the selling market does not meet requirements, for example, domestic products in Vietnam promising "biodegradability" when industrial composting is almost non-existent.
  • No compatibility when: The product requires high moisture or gas barrier capabilities, and the green materials under consideration have not yet met standards and have not been tested.
  • No compatibility when: You expect the print color and surface to be absolutely uniform like virgin plastic.

A special point to emphasize for the Vietnamese market: promising "biodegradable" for domestically sold goods without a corresponding collection and composting system is an empty promise. It does not help the environment and poses a reputational risk when questioned.

Generic labels like "clean," "eco," "natural," or "vegan" do not have clear legal definitions. Using them without accompanying certifications, such as Leaping Bunny, Vegan Society, or a specific ingredient map, leads to misleading greenwashing.

Costs, time and quantity

The cost of green materials is generally moderate to high compared to equivalent conventional materials. The difference comes from the costs of recycled or bio-based raw materials, certification costs, and sometimes testing costs before committing to mass production.

It is impossible to provide a general timeframe as each material in this group has a different process. What is certain is that a testing phase with real materials is needed before finalizing the design, as recycled and plant-based substrates may discolor and be uneven compared to virgin materials.

Certification EN 13432 European standards for compostable packaging: at least 90% biodegradable within 6 months and at least 90% reduced to particles smaller than 2mm after 3 months, without harming the quality of compost.
