Why the dieline comes first

Lock the dieline first, draw the artwork after

Sinh Vũ doctrine, article 10.04: lock the material, its format and the finishing of each physical touchpoint before locking its visuals.

  • Artwork drawn on the wrong dieline

Design the packaging on an approximate box, and once the real dieline arrives, text falls into folds and the logo gets cut at the flaps.

  • You only see it when you fold it

A box that looks great on screen may be hard to close, leave the lid ajar or crush when stacked. A printed dieline folded by hand answers faster than any drawing.

  • Every printer has its own machines

Each plant has its own sheet sizes and cutting dies. This dieline is for testing and asking; the printer will rebuild the real die for their machines.

Questions

What people often ask

Three questions Sinh Vũ often gets about this tool.

Can I send this dieline straight to the printer for die-cutting?

It is enough to fold a mock-up, place artwork and get a quote. The printer will rebuild the cutting die for their dies, sheet sizes and machines; send this file along so they understand your intent.

Do I enter inside or outside dimensions?

Inside dimensions, the empty space that holds the product. The board thickness is added at each fold automatically.

Which software opens the PDF?

Illustrator, CorelDRAW and Inkscape all open it. Cut and fold lines sit on two separate spot colors named CutContour and Crease, the convention printers commonly use.
