PCR is plastic recovered from products discarded by users, such as water bottles, containers, and old packaging. The collected materials go through washing, sorting, and thermal reprocessing steps to become new plastic pellets, which are then molded into packaging. The most common is rPET, which stands for recycled PET, as PET has a relatively complete collection and recycling infrastructure in many markets.
In terms of functionality, rPET meets the food contact safety standards set by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), but it is mandatory that the specific recycling process must be evaluated and approved by each agency. Not all rPET automatically qualifies. In Vietnam, plastic packaging for food contact, including PCR versions, still falls under the scope of QCVN 12-1:2011/BYT.
In addition to rPET, the market also has PCR from PP (recycled polypropylene) and PE (recycled polyethylene), used in flexible bags or rigid boxes depending on the application.
The decision to use PCR should stem from brand strategy and market demands, not just trends.

Do not choose PCR when: The requirement is for transparent and perfectly colored plastic like virgin plastic, when the supply meets standards exceeding the budget, or when the brand wants to use green labels but does not have valid certification. Telling a green story without basis is misleading greenwashing, and the risk to reputation is not a marketing advantage.
The cost of PCR materials, especially rPET that meets food contact standards, is generally moderate to high compared to equivalent virgin plastics. The reason: the collection, sorting, and reprocessing processes are more complex, and the supply of high-quality materials is not as abundant as traditional plastics.
Production time depends on the material supplier and the ability to meet the PCR source at the time of ordering. You should directly ask the supplier about inventory status and lead time (the time from ordering to delivery) before planning production, as the supply of standard PCR may not be stable seasonally or market-wise.
Regarding minimum quantity: depending on the type of packaging and manufacturer, PCR packaging often has higher minimum quantity requirements than standard plastic packaging due to material preparation and color testing costs. It is possible, but not all rPET is automatically acceptable. The specific recycling process must be evaluated and approved by the FDA (USA) or EFSA (Europe) before it can be used for direct food contact. In Vietnam, plastic packaging for food contact still falls under QCVN 12-1:2011/BYT. You need to ask your material supplier for specific certifications before making a decision.
There is a difference. Recycled plastic backgrounds may discolor and not be absolutely uniform like virgin plastic, so color checks are necessary before production runs. There is a real risk. If a green label does not come with specific certification and actual PCR ratios, this is misleading green labeling (greenwashing), a serious reputational risk, especially in the increasingly regulated European market.
