This is the contrast of gloss and matte created by localized UV coating, one of the most popular packaging finishing techniques in the mid to high-end segment.

What is UV coating ?

UV coating is a technique that applies a hard glossy layer over the printed surface, then uses ultraviolet light to instantly dry the coating. Because it dries immediately, the surface can move on to the next processing step without waiting time.

There are two main forms:

  • Spot UV: Only coats a selected area, usually the logo, product name, or main pattern. That area stands out glossy while the rest of the sheet remains matte. The contrast between glossy and matte creates both visual and tactile effects, allowing the touch to feel the boundary between the two areas.
  • Flood UV: Coats the entire printed surface with a glossy layer, primarily to protect the surface from scratches, enhance water resistance, and create a more uniform, vibrant color. It is often more economical than spot UV and requires less positioning technique.

There is also the strike-through technique: a full UV coating over a locally matte layer, creating a reverse contrast compared to regular spot UV.

When to choose, when not to

Spot UV works best when the packaging already has a matte finish and needs a subtle highlight without pushing the budget to foil stamping. Flood UV is suitable when surface protection is prioritized or when uniform, more prominent colors are needed across the entire sheet.

Costs, time and quantity

UV coating falls into the mid-range cost group among finishing techniques for packaging. The premium effects group includes UV coating, foil stamping, and embossing, which typically add to the base printing cost, and flood UV is usually more economical than spot UV because it does not require a separate positioning plate.

Spot UV requires a separate positioning file in addition to the main design file. This file needs to be separated and clearly named so that the printer can align it correctly. Modern digital coating systems can achieve optical positioning accuracy within plus or minus 0.1mm, but even a 1mm shift in small text details can ruin the effect.

Reference time frame Approximately 3 to 5 weeks from the time the design file is completed to when the goods arrive at the warehouse, depending on the printer and order quantity.

The UV coating becomes hard once dry. When die-cutting and folding the box, this hard layer can bend under pressure and easily crack, causing the surface to peel or develop white edges. The safety rule is to leave a gap of 1.5 to 3mm between the UV coating and any die-cut lines, fold lines, or cut edges.
