What is foil stamping?

Foil stamping (or hot foil stamping) is a technique that uses a heated metal die to press a layer of metallic foil onto specific areas of the packaging surface. The heat and pressure from the die accurately adhere the foil to the paper, creating a metallic shine that conventional ink cannot reproduce.

Foil colors are not limited to gold and silver. There are currently copper, special colors, and even holographic effects. Each color still uses the same embossing principle, differing only in the type of foil.

Die-cutting can be made from three types of materials depending on needs. Magnesium dies are suitable for short runs and medium details, brass dies are more durable for average production, and hardened steel dies are for long runs requiring high durability. Each design needs a separate die; this is an initial investment cost you need to factor into your budget.

When to choose, when not to

Foil stamping adds value when you need a clear visual anchor that conventional four-color printing cannot achieve. The brand logo on gift boxes, the name of a premium product line, or the name of a recipient personalized for VIP clients are all reasonable applications.
