Couché paper: the most popular sharp printing substrate

From cosmetic boxes to food packaging, couche is the default material for most folding boxes. The issue is not whether to choose couche or not, but which type to choose and how much to use.

Quick summary

Coated paper (coated paper) is a type of paper that has a mineral coating applied to the surface to hold ink, providing sharper images and more accurate colors than regular paper. There are two main variants: single-sided coated (C1S, suitable for folding boxes) and double-sided coated (C2S, suitable for double-sided printed materials). This is a reasonable choice for most common to mid-range box packaging that requires beautiful product images at a controlled cost.

If you are holding a cosmetics box, a cake box, or a pharmaceutical box in your hand, it’s likely made of couche paper. This material is popular not due to a lack of options, but because it effectively solves the problem most brands face: beautiful color printing, sharp images, and costs that are manageable.

What is couche paper?

Coated paper (coated paper) is paper that has a layer of mineral, usually kaolin, applied to the surface before printing. This coating smooths the surface, keeping the ink on top of the paper instead of soaking into the fibers, resulting in more accurate colors, finer details, and sharper images compared to standard offset paper.

There are two main variants you need to know:

  • C1S (coated one side): the outside is smooth for printing, the inside is for uncoated or adhesive. At the same weight, C1S is stiffer than C2S because the uncoated side maintains fiber structure. This is the standard type for folding packaging boxes and covers.
  • C2S (coated two sides): both sides are coated, printing beautifully on both. Suitable for sleeves, brochures with boxes, or any application requiring double-sided printing.

Each type has two surface textures: glossy and matte. Glossy coating provides vibrant colors and reflects light. Matte coating offers a subdued, elegant look and is less glare-prone. Sinh Vũ often recommends matte lamination for packaging boxes, but this is a recommendation regarding texture, not a hard rule.

Regarding grammage: a range of 300 to 350 gsm is the most common for folding boxes based on practical experience. Lower grammage, around 210 to 250 gsm, is suitable for labels, thin sleeves, and accompanying publications. Note that the actual thickness may vary by paper supplier, so specific specs should be checked when entering production; general conversion numbers should not be used as technical commitments.

When to choose, and when not

Glossy paper is a reasonable choice when product images and brand colors are the top priority, with a budget ranging from affordable to mid-range, and the box serves as outer packaging rather than needing to protect moisture or retain fragrance inside.

  • Strengths: Sharp color printing, realistic images, and fine details. Reasonable material costs compared to art paper. Wide supply, short lead time. C1S is sturdier than C2S at the same basis weight, suitable for box structures. Various basis weights to choose according to stiffness requirements.
  • Limitations: No moisture, gas barrier, or sealing capabilities; does not retain scent like laminated films. The surface feels less natural and less rustic compared to kraft or art paper. If additional plastic lamination is applied, recyclability decreases. It lacks the tactile quality needed for high-end luxury positioning that requires special paper textures.

Do not choose couche when the brand is positioned towards handmade, rustic, or natural, as the smooth, glossy surface of couche will disrupt that feeling. Also, do not use couche as primary packaging for moist foods, oils, or items that need to retain aroma, as the mineral coating is not a true barrier. If the customer aims for luxury tactile with embossing, foil stamping, and special hand feel, art paper is the right choice.

Costs, time and quantity

The cost of couche materials is moderate within the list of packaging materials. Compared to art paper or metal, it is significantly cheaper. Compared to kraft or duplex, it is slightly higher, but the print quality is distinctly better.

300 to 350 gsm The most common quantitative range for folded packaging boxes
210 to 250 gsm Suitable for labels, thin sleeves, and publications accompanying products.

The minimum quantity and production time depend on the printer, box size, and additional processing techniques such as foil stamping or lamination. Generally, couche is the most common material on the market, and lead times are usually shorter than for art paper or metal.

Even with standard color printing materials, you still need to print samples and compare Pantone colors before running production. Sinh Vũ is responsible for designing the structure, graphics, and print-ready files, but does not guarantee printing costs as actual prices are determined by the printer based on specifications and quantities.

What does Sinh Vũ need from you to get started

For Sinh Vũ to advise on the correct type of couche, correct weight, and correct processing technique for your box, the following information is needed:

  • SKU number and box size: How many product codes, and what are the preliminary sizes or volumes needed?
  • Brand positioning: mainstream, mid-range, or premium, to determine if there is a need to upgrade to art paper.
  • Market and compliance: selling domestically or exporting, are there labeling requirements according to Decree 43/2017 or food and pharmaceutical regulations?
  • Reference budget: helps Sinh Vũ advise on quantification and suitable enhancements, without pushing costs beyond necessary limits.
  • Timeline: When do you need sample products, and when do you need the actual production?
  • Special requirements: needs to be printed on both sides or plans for foil stamping, matte lamination, or additional processing.

When you have all the above information, Sinh Vũ can immediately determine C1S or C2S, which quantity, matte or glossy surface, and prepare the file according to the printer's requirements. You can send your needs through the contact form, and Sinh Vũ will respond within one business day.

Frequently asked questions

What distinguishes glossy paper from matte paper?

Glossy paper provides a bright, vibrant, eye-catching appearance on the shelf. Matte paper offers a more subdued, sophisticated look with less light reflection. Sinh Vũ often recommends matte lamination for packaging boxes to reduce the cheap shiny feel, but the final choice still depends on your brand positioning.

How do 250 gsm and 350 gsm differ when making boxes?

The higher the gsm, the thicker and sturdier the paper, resulting in better box shape retention. A range of 300 to 350 gsm is the most common for folding boxes based on practical experience. However, the actual thickness depends on each paper supplier, so specific specs should be checked before selection.

Is coated paper recyclable?

Coated paper is theoretically recyclable within the paper stream. However, if it has a plastic film laminated on top, the recyclability significantly decreases due to the difficulty in separating layers. If recycling is a priority, you should discuss with Sinh Vũ about alternative surface treatment options instead of plastic lamination.
