It fits brands positioned as natural, artisanal, and eco-friendly, and is used for bags, outer packaging, but it is almost impermeable to moisture and air, so it is not suitable for directly containing moist or oily food without a coating.

Kraft shines when the brand wants to tell a story of nature, craftsmanship, and sustainability, and when the packaging serves as an outer layer rather than a direct contact layer for oily food.
You should choose for: a brand positioned as natural and handcrafted, paper shopping bags, specialty coffee in the mainstream segment, agricultural products and OCOP, inserts for e-commerce. You should not choose when: vibrant printing with many details is needed, direct contact with oily or moist food without a coating is required, moisture protection to retain aroma is necessary, or a premium positioning requires a smooth glossy surface.
In the paper group, kraft is low-cost and flexible for small batches. However, if the product needs oil or moisture resistance, an additional barrier layer must be applied, and the oil resistance must be tested using the Kit test according to TAPPI T 559 (scale 1 to 12); not all thick paper is oil-resistant (source: PaperIndex Academy). This coating increases costs and may affect recyclability. Raw Kraft is almost impermeable to moisture and oil, and the generic brown color does not automatically meet food contact standards. To hold oily items, it must have an oil-resistant coating tested with a Kit test (TAPPI T 559) and verified paper sources that meet food contact standards.
The brown of raw kraft can dull colors; bright colors printed on dark backgrounds will fade and not be vibrant. It is essential to simulate and print test samples on the actual type of kraft used. If vibrant colors are needed, consider using bleached kraft or couche paper, but this will sacrifice the raw appearance.
Kraft cannot be recycled many times and is biodegradable. However, plastic or PFAS-based oil-resistant coatings hinder recycling and biodegradability, so coatings must be checked batch by batch.
