Agricultural product and OCOP packaging: telling the growing region story.

Designing packaging for agricultural products and OCOP products is not just about aesthetics; it’s about bringing the regional story to the forefront, meeting food labeling requirements, and attaching traceability labels according to regulations to open channels for supermarkets, gifts, and exports.

Quick summary

Agricultural product and OCOP packaging is a group of packaging for agricultural products, local specialties, and products under the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, focusing on showcasing regional origins, meeting OCOP scoring criteria, and integrating traceability labels. This group is suitable for cooperatives, production households, and local businesses wanting to upgrade their OCOP star rating, enter modern supermarket channels, create gifts, or export.

A jar of Phu Quoc fish sauce, a bag of ST25 rice, a box of Cao Bang cake: each item has a story compelling enough to make buyers choose immediately if the packaging tells it in the right place and the right way. This page helps you understand what agricultural product and OCOP packaging needs in terms of structure, legal labeling, and visual storytelling, to decide if this is the right investment at the right time.

What is agricultural and OCOP packaging

This is a packaging group for agricultural products, local specialties, and products under the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, which is a state-supported initiative for developing local signature products. Unlike regular food packaging, this group has three simultaneous requirements: compliance with food labeling laws, meeting OCOP scoring criteria if you are participating in the program, and clearly indicating the regional origin on the front of the packaging.

Common structures include paper bags, composite film bags (multi-layer material bags that are better moisture-resistant than plain paper bags), folded paper boxes, and adhesive labels. The most common variant is the stand-up pouch used for dry agricultural products and processed snacks because it is both moisture-resistant and stands upright on shelves. Kraft paper is favored for its rustic positioning and handcrafted story, but it is important to note that the kraft background can dull colors and be less vibrant than a white background, which should be considered when selecting a color palette.

Legally, packaged processed food products must self-declare according to Decree 15/2018/ND-CP and label all required information according to Decree 43/2017/ND-CP. The font size for mandatory content must not be less than 1.2mm, and the production date and expiration date must be listed in the order of day, month, year. If the product has been recognized as OCOP, the OCOP emblem (star logo) can only be placed on the packaging while still within the recognition period; if expired, it must be re-evaluated.

When to choose, when not to

Packaging with a well-invested design is most effective when the product needs to enter visually competitive channels: modern supermarkets, specialty stores, gift shelves, or e-commerce platforms. In the OCOP channel, packaging also directly affects the score because the OCOP criteria (according to Decision 148/QĐ-TTg 2023) separately evaluates the product story, local identity, and label design out of a total of 100 points. A 5-star rating is achieved with scores from 90 to 100 points and qualifies for export.

  • Applicable when: Cooperatives, production households, local businesses want to upgrade their OCOP star rating or maintain their score after a reassessment.
  • Applicable when: Agricultural products, regional specialties need positioning linked to geographical locations, traditional methods, and specific stories of the region.
  • Applicable when: Products have achieved star ratings, need to print the OCOP logo as per regulations, and integrate QR code traceability labels.
  • Applicable when: Processed agricultural products targeting gift channels, supermarkets, or exports need bilingual labels and a professional appearance.
  • No compatibility when: Fresh agricultural products are sold in bulk at wholesale markets without brand packaging, as design costs will not be recoverable.
  • No compatibility when: The product has not completed the self-declaration documents or does not have a clear source of materials, as the legal label lacks sufficient basis for design.
  • No compatibility when: You want to place the OCOP logo on the packaging while the product has not been recognized with a star rating or the recognition has expired.

For agricultural products aimed at export, you need to further cross-check the regulations of the target market. For example, some agricultural products exported to Europe are subject to the EU's deforestation tracing regulations (EUDR). The application timeline may change based on the EU's final decision, so this aspect needs confirmation from legal experts at the time of consultation; Sinh Vũ does not confirm this on its own.

Costs, time and quantity

The cost of designing agricultural and OCOP packaging falls within a moderate range, lower than cosmetics or high-end corporate gifts, but requires multiple layers of content: complete legal labels, regional stories, OCOP logos if applicable, and space for QR code tracing. The more SKUs (distinct product codes that need designing), the higher the total design cost, but the cost per SKU can decrease if a common identity system is used.

The time from brief to the final file delivered to the printer usually ranges from 4 to 6 weeks depending on the number of SKUs, the complexity of the legal labels, and the number of revisions. If you are still finalizing the self-declaration documents in parallel, additional time for coordination between both parties should be considered.

What does Sinh Vũ need from you to get started

To allow Sinh Vũ to understand the problem correctly and provide suitable design directions from the start, you should prepare the following information before the meeting:

  • SKU number to be designed: How many product codes are there, and how many different weight or volume specifications does each code have?
  • OCOP status: Has the product achieved OCOP star rating yet, is it still within the recognition period, or is it preparing to register for the first time?
  • Legal documentation: Have you self-declared the product according to Decree 15/2018? Is there a self-declaration for Sinh Vũ to cross-check the label content?
  • Distribution and market channels: Selling domestically or exporting, in supermarkets, specialty shelves, e-commerce platforms, or as corporate gifts.
  • Regional story: Where is the cultivation or production located, what are the distinctive methods, are there on-site photos or materials about the location?
  • Design budget and timeline: When do you expect to approve the file and place the print order? Are there any hard deadlines (for example, OCOP evaluation, trade fairs, gift season)?
  • Specific compliance requirements: If exporting, what is the target market so Sinh Vũ can note bilingual label requirements or certifications that need legal expert coordination?

You can send your information through Sinh Vũ's request form or message directly to schedule a brief meeting. Sinh Vũ will respond on the same working day with clarifying questions if needed, before making a proposal for the approach and design quote.

Frequently asked questions

When did the OCOP logo (starred logo) start being printed on packaging?

The OCOP logo can only be printed or affixed to packaging after the product has been officially recognized by the competent authority as achieving a star rating. This recognition has a validity period; once it expires, it must be re-evaluated and recognized again to continue using the logo. Sinh Vũ will clarify the recognition status before including the logo in the design file to avoid printing violations.

Is a QR code for traceability mandatory, and what part does Sinh Vũ handle?

For current domestic OCOP products, QR traceability labels are encouraged tools that help increase transparency and trust with buyers. Sinh Vũ designs space for the QR code on the packaging, ensuring it is printed clearly and can be scanned. The data behind the QR code (traceability platform, information about the raw material region) is provided by you or the traceability system provider; Sinh Vũ does not provide this platform.

Choose kraft paper or laminated film for agricultural products?

Kraft paper is suitable for dry agricultural products, positioned as natural, eco-friendly, and with a natural story, at a relatively reasonable cost. One point to note is that the kraft background makes the print color less vibrant compared to a white background, which needs to be considered when choosing colors. For dry agricultural products or processed snacks that require moisture protection, use sealed laminated film; the print color on the film will also differ from that on paper. Sinh Vũ will advise on suitable materials after understanding the product and distribution channel.
