Glass is a rigid packaging material made from melted silica sand (SiO2), chemically inert and non-porous. This means that glass virtually does not react with the product inside and does not allow oxygen, moisture, or carbon dioxide (CO2) to pass through. Common glass packaging comes in three main forms. The first is standard soda-lime glass (Type III according to pharmacopoeia), widely used for beverage bottles, cosmetic jars, syrups, and oral medications. The second is borosilicate glass (Type I), which has the highest hydrolytic resistance due to its high boron oxide content, used for injectables and very sensitive pharmaceutical products. The third is amber glass: dark brown bottles containing iron oxide and carbon, blocking ultraviolet (UV) rays (below about 400nm) and some blue-violet light, protecting light-sensitive products like essential oils and certain medications.
Regarding shapes, glass can be in the form of dropper bottles, jars, ampules, pump bottles, or beverage bottles. The surface can be clear, colored, or frosted. Labels can be stickers or printed directly on the glass, each direction has its own technical constraints.
Glass is most reasonable when a product has two factors at once: high sensitivity (requiring an inert container that does not interact) and a price segment sufficient to absorb higher material and shipping costs. These two conditions often meet in premium cosmetics, perfumes, essential oils, premium beverages, and pharmaceuticals.
Glass is not suitable when the product belongs to the mass market segment that requires strict cost optimization, or when the distribution channel has many transport stages that cannot control packaging conditions. It should also not be used for products intended for children or in environments prone to dangerous breakage.
The cost of glass is high compared to other rigid packaging materials, and it needs to account for three components: the bottle or jar itself, the internal cushioning to prevent breakage during shipping, and higher shipping costs due to weight. Premium cosmetic products and perfumes can often absorb this cost because their brand value justifies it. Mass-market products find it difficult.
The minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom glass bottles depends on the supplier and the shape of the bottle. Standard stock bottles allow for much smaller quantities compared to custom mold bottles. Production and delivery times vary significantly depending on the source, especially if imported from abroad.
Regarding compliance regulations in Vietnam: glass packaging that comes into direct contact with food is subject to QCVN 12-4:2015/BYT, issued under Circular 35/2015/TT-BYT, which regulates limits on lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) migration. Pharmaceutical products need to select the correct type of glass according to pharmacopoeia (Type I, II, or III). You should directly compare the original regulatory documents and confirm with compliance experts before finalizing materials for products with legal requirements.
