Casting models: choose the right level.

Not every image needs a face, and not every face is worth the accompanying cost.

Quick summary

The casting level should start from the role of people in the frame: whether you need people, hands, lifestyle models, or brand ambassadors. As you go higher, costs and legal obligations increase, so only pay for the level that truly serves the message. At every level where people are identified, a rights contract is mandatory.

The casting level should not start from the budget or production habits. It should begin with a question: what role do people play in this frame? When you can answer that question, the casting level will naturally become clear.

Four casting levels and corresponding roles

Sinh Vũ categorizes casting into four levels based on the presence of people in the visual message.

  • No need for people: Product photos, flat lay (flat composition), macro shots of material textures. People are unnecessary, and their absence keeps the focus on the product.
  • Anonymous hand or silhouette: needs to show product usage but the face is not the focal point. A hand making coffee, a figure sitting with a book. This level is enough to create a human feel without needing full model casting.
  • The lifestyle model: needs real usage context, matching the target customer profile. The model does not have to be a star but should look like the person you want to sell to.
  • Representative face or celebrity: large campaigns that require appeal and credibility from the individual. Costs and contractual obligations at this level increase significantly.

Factors to consider before making a decision

  • Are people a storytelling element? If the message is about material, scent, or product shape, people can dilute the main subject.
  • Face recognition level: anonymous, hand, close-up, or representative face. Each level carries its own legal constraints.
  • Alignment with the target customer profile: Do the models look like the customer segment you want to reach? Beautiful photos with models outside the target segment still do not persuade the right audience.
  • Term and channels for image usage: The rights to use model images need to be clearly stated in the contract: where they will be used, for how long, and for what purpose.
No need for suitable models when the product can tell its own story, the product's form is the main selling point, or the production budget needs to focus on lighting and styling. Need suitable models when the message is about usage, the feeling of ownership, or the alignment between customers and brand imagery.

Common errors

  • Forget to sign the model release: This is the most costly mistake. When a person in the photo is identifiable and the image is used for commercial purposes, a signed model release is required, regardless of where the photo was taken or who the subject is. Without this document, you cannot use the image for advertising later.
  • Select models that do not represent the customer profile: technically good images but models do not resemble actual customers, causing the message to lose its persuasive power with the right audience.
  • Hire a high-profile face for needs that only require hands: the cost and complexity of contracts at the representative level are not suitable if the role is merely to operate the product within the frame.

Choose the casting level based on the role of people in the message, not assuming that having models makes the image stronger.

Sinh Vũ R1

The viewpoint of Sinh Vũ

Sinh Vũ casts models in pre-production according to their roles in the shot list. Before entering the studio, Sinh Vũ clearly defines each frame's needs for hands, poses, or faces to avoid over-hiring or under-hiring. After production, Sinh Vũ delivers along with model releases and location releases, clearly stating the scope and duration of use. This is not a bureaucratic procedure; it is a boundary that Sinh Vũ clearly outlines to ensure you do not encounter legal issues when using the images later.

The copyright of the models and locations follows separate contracts with each party. Sinh Vũ will clarify this in the briefing so you understand what rights you are purchasing, where you can use them, and for how long.

Frequently asked questions

Is a contract needed for models holding products?

Yes. When individuals in the photos are identifiable, even if only a hand or part of the body is visible, and the photos are used for commercial purposes, a model release is mandatory. Without this document, you cannot use the photos for advertising later without legal risks.

How do lifestyle models and commercial models differ?

Lifestyle models often portray a specific customer persona in real-use contexts, making the images feel more natural. Commercial models are hired for higher technical standards, with strong recognizable faces, often appearing in major campaigns and accompanied by higher costs and more complex contractual obligations.

Is there ever a time when not using a model is better?

Yes. With pure product images, flat lays, or macro shots of material textures, models are not needed, and the images are usually cleaner and more focused on the product. Adding people is only appropriate when they are part of the message.
