Retail construction: choose the correct substrate material before printing.

Signs that fail early or are installed unsafely are often not due to printing errors, but rather due to material selection from the beginning.

Quick summary

Choosing foam PVC for indoor and short-term signs, acrylic for backlit signs and premium interiors, and aluminum composite material (ACM) for long-term outdoor signs. Large format printing on a rigid substrate typically uses UV flatbed printing technology. Determine the correct placement and desired lifespan of the sign before notifying the workshop to avoid having to redo it after just one rainy season.

Quick comparison
You should choose this direction when
  • short-term or low-cost indoor signs and boards: choose foam PVC
  • backlit signs, showcasing premium interiors: choose acrylic (mica)
  • long-lasting wall-mounted outdoor signs: choose aluminum composite panels (ACM)
Not needed when.
  • use foam PVC for outdoor signs that are long-lasting, prone to warping and fading early
  • skipped the installation method and framework, resulting in beautiful signage that is difficult to mount or unsafe

When a sign is warped after three months, or a backlit sign has uneven brightness, the fault is rarely in the printing process. The fault lies in the material decisions made from the start: choosing the wrong substrate, overlooking lighting conditions, or not considering the installation method. This page helps you understand enough to make the right decisions before working with the workshop.

Four most common materials

Retail spaces typically use four types of hard backgrounds for signage and environmental graphics. Each type has its own application area:

  • Foam PVC: Lightweight, easy to cut, and suitable for flat UV printing. The primary choice for indoor signage, price lists, short-term backdrops, and seasonal promotional items.
  • Acrylic (Mica): high optical clarity, even light diffusion. Suitable for backlit signs, displaying high-resolution graphics in interiors, and premium display shelves.
  • Aluminum composite material (ACM): two aluminum layers enclosing a stable core, durable against weather for many years. The right choice for storefront signs and outdoor directional signs.
  • Polycarbonate: Impact-resistant and durable. Consider when signage is placed in high-impact areas or needs to withstand more force than acrylic.

Note: the actual lifespan of each material depends on Vietnam's humid tropical climate, the thickness of the sheet, and the UV coating. It is advisable to ask for warranty from the supplier instead of relying on figures from foreign sources.

When to choose which direction

Indoors, short-term or seasonal replacements: PVC foam. Cost-effective, can be printed immediately using UV flatbed technology, easily replaced when the promotion ends.

Backlit signs, premium interiors: Acrylic. The optical clarity of acrylic helps distribute light evenly, avoiding dark streaks or uneven bright spots. Foam PVC does not meet this requirement.

Outdoor, long-lasting: Aluminum composite material (ACM). A two-layer aluminum structure provides better rigidity and weather resistance than foam PVC.

Environmental graphics (walls, floors, glass): Roll-up decals, choose the type suitable for each surface. Wall decals can be fabric or removable paper decals depending on maintenance requirements. Floor decals need to have a slip-resistant layer.

What you need to know about large format printing technology

The two large format printing technologies you will often hear about when working with a workshop:

  • UV flatbed printing: Directly prints onto rigid substrates (foam PVC, acrylic, ACM, MDF wood). The ink cures with ultraviolet light immediately upon printing, providing durable colors and surfaces that can withstand light contact.
  • Roll-to-roll printing: printing on flexible materials such as vinyl decals, banners, or stretch fabrics. Suitable for large wall graphics, hanging banners, and window decals.

The file resolution needs to be calculated based on the actual viewing distance at the point of sale. A sign viewed from two to three meters can use a lower resolution than a handheld flyer. However, if the original file is too small, the image will still break even if printed with extreme care. Sinh Vũ exports files according to the specifications of each item before sending them to the workshop.

Common errors when executing retail projects

  • Using foam PVC for long-lasting outdoor signs: this material will warp and fade early in tropical climate conditions.
  • Choose materials without considering the light source: backlit signs using non-optically clear backgrounds will have uneven dark spots, directly affecting brand perception.
  • Ignore installation methods and frameworks: a beautiful sign that is not securely attached or safe poses real risks, not just aesthetic issues.
  • Do not neglect maintenance and replacement planning: seasonal promotional signs need to be easily removed, stored, or replaced. If not considered from the beginning, costs will increase later.
  • Incorrect print file: missing bleed area, incorrect color mode, or inappropriate resolution for viewing distance.

Sinh Vũ's viewpoint

Choosing the right substrate based on location, durability, and lighting conditions is the first step. Printing and installation come next.

Practical experience, Sinh Vũ Studio

Sinh Vũ serves as the creative director: guiding material choices, preparing large format files to the correct specifications, and connecting with the construction workshop. We do not guarantee printing and installation prices as those are reported directly by the workshop partners, depending on the volume and conditions of each sales point. What Sinh Vũ controls is the correct approach from the start, ensuring the workshop can implement safely and you do not have to redo work after a season of rain and sun.

Frequently asked questions

Is foam PVC suitable for outdoor use?

Suitable for short-term use, but not the optimal choice for long-term outdoor signage. This material can easily warp and fade depending on the climate, thickness of the sheet, and UV coating. If the sign needs to withstand multiple seasons of rain and sun, aluminum composite material (ACM) is a better choice.

Does Sinh Vũ provide quotes for construction and printing?

Sinh Vũ prepares material options, size guidelines, file preparation, and connects with the construction workshop. Printing and installation costs are reported directly by the workshop partner as they depend on the volume, specific materials, and construction conditions at your sales point.

How should the design file be prepared for large format printing?

Resolution needs to be calculated based on the actual viewing distance, not according to standard offset printing. A sign viewed from a distance can be printed at a lower resolution than a handheld flyer, but if the file is too small, the image will still break. Sinh Vũ exports files with the correct specifications for each item before sending them to the workshop.
