Gravure printing (which means engraving ink cells onto a metal cylinder and then transferring the ink onto the material) provides solid colors, fine details, and stability over millions of prints. However, this is only valuable if you choose the right type of packaging and sufficient production volume. If either condition is incorrect, the cost of creating the gravure cylinder will become a burden instead of an advantage.

Gravure is strongest on which surfaces

This technology is designed to print on non-absorbent, flat, and uniform surfaces. Specifically:

  • Single-layer plastic film and composite film (multiple layers of bonded materials): snack bags, coffee bags with gas release valves, candy wrappers, moisture-resistant food packaging.
  • Aluminum film and laminated aluminum film: strong ink adhesion, accurate colors, beautiful reflectivity.
  • Coated paper: a surface smooth enough for the printing cylinder to apply ink evenly.
  • Shrink sleeve label: a heat-shrinkable film that wraps around bottles or cans, requiring solid and sharp color printing for retail.

On rough surfaces like uncoated kraft paper, non-woven fabric, or uneven materials, copper rollers do not transfer ink evenly and result in noticeably poorer quality. This is not the case for using copper tubes.

When the copper pipe justifies the cost

The largest cost of a gravure cylinder is making the cylinder, with each color requiring a separate cylinder. This cost does not change regardless of the quantity printed, so the only way to make it reasonable is to spread it over a very large output. The specific threshold varies by color, print size, and each factory in Vietnam, so you need to request a direct quote to get an accurate figure.

In addition to output, there are three more conditions for the pipe to truly perform:

  • Once the design is finalized and rarely changes: redoing the axis can be costly if the template is frequently altered.
  • You need consistent color across multiple batches: when the same packaging code appears at various points of sale or for export, copper tubes maintain color stability better than other technologies across multiple runs.
  • Request for fine detail and solid color: eye-catching product images on shelves, large solid color areas, smooth color transitions.

When should you not choose copper?

Small output or testing the market: High cylinder costs will drive up the price per unit, making it uncompetitive. Flexo printing (using flexible plastic plates) or digital printing (no printing plates needed, suitable for short runs) are more practical options. Flexo is usually cheaper for medium output, while digital incurs no plate costs but has a higher unit price as output increases.

Design changes: Each time you adjust color or shape, it requires a redo of the axis for that color. The copper tube aligns with a brand that has a clearly defined and stable image, not a product that is still experimenting with its direction.

Common errors when selecting a tube

  • Choose a copper tube for small batches or products that are testing the market, then bear the high cost per unit.
  • Changing the design while the axis is already engraved requires starting over for each color change.
  • Expect beautiful copper printing on rough surfaces or uneven materials.
  • Using cost figures from foreign sources or blogs as a fixed reference point in Vietnam: the cost of the shaft and machine operation in the country needs to be directly inquired from the factory.

Not okay. Each design change means remaking the core shaft for each color change, and that cost is not small. Copper tubes are suitable when the design is finalized and stable. If you are still testing the market or need flexibility in changing samples, digital printing is a much more practical option.
