Most flexible food packaging uses multi-layer laminates, meaning multiple layers of film are bonded together, with each layer serving a specific function. For coffee and snacks, a common structure is an outer layer for printing, a middle layer for barrier protection, and an inner layer for heat sealing and food contact. This is not a fixed formula and depends on the product and the printer, so you need to confirm specifics with the film supplier.
A barrier is the ability to prevent moisture, oxygen, light, and strange odors from permeating the film. For roasted coffee, green tea, or fried snacks, poor barriers mean products spoil before their time. Aluminum-based films provide high barriers but are rigid and can crack when folded multiple times. This consideration must occur at the material selection stage, not after printing is complete.
This is the point that many brand owners overlook the most. When the printed side is on the same side or the same roll as the food contact surface, low migration ink should be used, which is ink controlled to limit substances from the ink transferring into the food. Even when the printed side is on the outside, the phenomenon of set-off when rolling or stacking can still transfer ink to the food contact layer on the next roll.
The EU's GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) regulation according to Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 (issued in 2006) requires inks to be produced and processed to limit contamination through base materials. Vietnam does not yet have a mandatory equivalent standard, but if you export to the EU or create labels for that market, this is a legal requirement, not a recommendation. When the printed side is not in contact with food, control must still ensure that substances do not transfer into the food due to bleed-through or absorption through the substrate.

Digital printing: Suitable for market test runs, multiple design versions, or frequently changing SKUs. No cylinder costs are incurred. Flexible regarding minimum quantities. When the product stabilizes and volume increases, consider switching to rotogravure or flexo to reduce costs.

Freshly roasted coffee releases CO2 after packaging, so the bag needs a one-way valve to allow gas to escape without letting oxygen in. Additionally, coffee is prone to oxidation and absorbs strange odors, so the composite film needs to have a barrier against oxygen and moisture at appropriate levels, often with a middle layer providing that barrier. The vertical seal type (K-seal) also needs to be considered from the start to ensure the bag stands upright on the shelf after packaging.
