Design can be perfect on screen, and materials can be produced to standard, but everything is most vulnerable at this stage: the field. Signs may be misaligned, wrong types of anchors used, and no one takes photos for approval because "it looks fine." A few months later, signs may sag, colors may differ between two stores, and no one takes responsibility because there is no documentation. Step 1: Field survey before implementation.

Site surveys (measuring and assessing the site before construction) are a mandatory step, not optional. The goal is to confirm all the following factors before the construction team arrives:

  • The actual size of the facade, installation location, height above ground.
  • Wall substrate: concrete, tiles, plaster, or mixed materials
  • Proposed anchor point: tapping for voids, checking for cracks, moisture, and weak mortar joints.
  • Power source: location, capacity, whether additional wiring is needed.
  • The need for forklifts or scaffolding, safe pathways for workers.
  • Obstacles: technical pipes, old lighting, old signs that need to be removed.

Bypassing this step, the construction team discovers upon arrival that the wall is hollow, the height is incorrect, or there are no power outlets. This leads to unexpected costs, delays, and sometimes necessitates on-the-spot design changes that are uncontrollable.

Step 2: Properly install anchor accessories for each substrate.

This is where technical errors occur most frequently because, on the surface, no one can tell right away. Wall plugs, expansion bolts, and threaded rods are the anchoring accessories that hold the sign to the wall. Each type is suitable for a different substrate:

  • Solid concrete wall: use expansion bolts or threaded rods embedded deep into a solid foundation.
  • Tiled wall: tap to locate hollow spots behind the tiles, anchor into the concrete layer inside, do not anchor into the tiles.
  • Gypsum wall (light partition): use the correct type of anchor specifically for gypsum, with limited load capacity.
  • Old wall, weak mortar joints, suspected water leakage: the foundation must be treated first, do not install directly.

Hard rule: use the correct manufacturer-recommended accessories for each type of surface, do not replace them with cheaper alternatives. Signs gradually deteriorate and fall after a few months mainly due to this mistake, not due to design or material.

Quick assembly to get by versus technically correct assembly: Quick assembly saves a few hours of labor today, but when the sign is misaligned or falls after three months, the cost of disassembly and reassembly and the loss of credibility with customers is much higher. In a chain with multiple locations, a mistake at one point leads to a lack of consistency across the entire system.

Step 3: Adjust during assembly.

Alignment is not done by eye estimation. During installation, use a ruler and laser level to ensure the sign is vertical, horizontal, and positioned correctly according to the installation drawing. For a chain of stores, the installation drawing must specify the height from the ground and the distance from the wall edge, so that all viewpoints are consistent as customers move from one point to another.

Alignment errors often do not reveal themselves until viewed from a distance or through comparative photos of different stores. At that point, it is very difficult to fix without completely disassembling.

Step 4: Acceptance with evidence.

Acceptance inspection is not a bureaucratic procedure. This step protects you in case of future disputes. The minimum acceptance checklist includes:

  • Torque check: sufficient force, but do not over-tighten to avoid cracking the acrylic or stripping threads
  • Safety cable check: mandatory for high-hanging signs and heavy signs
  • Test sturdiness: press in multiple directions, shake lightly to check for wobble.
  • Check color and finished product against the approved sample: colors, text, and logo in correct proportions
  • Completion documentation photography: overall angles, detail shots of anchor points, illuminated signs.

Without a handover record, there is no basis for warranty. Photos taken on the handover date serve as evidence of the initial condition and are the basis for determining responsibility in case of malfunctions.

Implementing simultaneously for a chain of multiple stores is not just about replicating one installation and scaling it. Each location has different foundational qualities, elevations, and electrical setups. The correct process is:

  • Creating a comprehensive list of items needed for the entire chain.

  • Create installation drawings specific to each point based on survey results.
  • Approve each point with photo documentation, do not approve the entire series at once.
