  • Aluminum composite material (ACM): A three-layer structure, with two aluminum faces sandwiching a plastic core, making the panel less prone to expansion than solid aluminum, resistant to warping, and maintaining surface quality through temperature and humidity changes. It is highly impact-resistant and weatherproof. This is the most popular substrate material for professional outdoor signage.
  • Solid aluminum or extruded aluminum: Lightweight, rust-resistant, withstands harsh conditions, and requires almost no maintenance for structural components. Commonly used for signage, frames, supports, and shaped components.
  • Stainless steel: High mechanical durability, good corrosion resistance, especially in coastal areas, widely used for premium embossed lettering and thick details. Heavier than aluminum, with higher material costs, but a corresponding lifespan.

All three require a UV-resistant surface coating to maintain printed or painted colors from fading. Good substrate materials do not protect colors without this layer.

When to consider acrylic, when to avoid

Acrylic with a protective layer, installed with proper expansion gaps: Can be used for outdoor light boxes, small signs, in partially covered locations. Lower cost than ACM, lighter. Disadvantages: more thermal expansion, requires precise gap calculations during installation, can crack at the edges if improperly fixed. Unprotected acrylic, rigid installation: Not suitable for harsh outdoor sunlight. Edge cracking, cloudiness, and color fading are common results after one or two seasons. Should not be used for identities requiring a lifespan of over two years without a maintenance and replacement plan.

The most durable materials are not necessarily the most expensive. They are the materials that fit the actual conditions at the installation site, are installed correctly, and have adequate surface protection.
