Selling well on platforms: is a separate website necessary?

The marketplace helps you reach customers, but it doesn't help you own them.

Quick summary

You need a dedicated website when you want to own customer data, tell your brand story comprehensively, and reduce dependence on the rules and fees of platforms. It’s not urgent if your revenue is still small, your product is unproven, or all resources are being optimized well on existing channels. A wise approach many brands are taking is to use platforms to reach new customers while using a dedicated website to retain customers and build a sustainable brand.

Selling well on the platform is a good sign. But "selling well" and "owning a brand" are two different things. On the platform, customers are buying from that platform; you are just a seller present there. The real question is not "do you need a website" but "what do you want to own in the long term."

What the floor does not give you.

The marketplace and social media do one thing well: they put products in front of potential buyers. But there are three things you will miss out on if you only sell through this channel.

  • Complete customer data: On the platform, you often only see order information; behavioral data (what customers viewed before purchasing, where they dropped off, whether they returned for a second purchase) is very rarely available. Without this data, all marketing decisions are based on guesswork.
  • Direct relationship with customers: When customers purchase on a platform, the relationship belongs to that platform. If the platform changes terms or increases fees tomorrow, you have no way to reconnect with past customers outside of the platform's channel.
  • Brand storytelling space: The booth on the floor is limited by the common interface, common categories, and content rules of the platform. You cannot fully explain why this brand exists, what makes it different, and why customers should be loyal to you instead of other sellers in the same industry.

When should you create a separate website

Not everyone needs a dedicated website right away. However, there are clear signs that indicate it’s time.

  • Revenue is stable enough and the product has been validated in the market, meaning you know who buys and why.
  • The base fees (commissions, payment fees, operating fees) are significantly impacting profit margins, and you want to reassess your sales channel strategy.
  • You want to build a customer list to maintain relationships, resell, and provide care without intermediaries.
  • The brand has enough stories to tell, and the booth on the platform does not have enough space for that story.

When to not rush

Sinh Vũ will be direct if it seems you do not need urgency.

  • If revenue is small or the product is in the testing phase, resources should focus on market validation, not on building additional channels.
  • There is no person or process to operate an additional channel, including content updates, order processing, and separate customer care.
  • There is no clear reason for customers to leave the platform and buy on your website. Creating a website without that reason will only result in a cost that does not generate any value.
Pure platform: Quick access, customers are ready to buy, but you do not own the data and relationships, relying on the platform's algorithms and fees, making it difficult to tell a complete brand story.

Combined platform with a dedicated website: Use the platform to reach new customers, use the website to retain customers, build loyalty, own data, and tell the brand story without being limited by the platform's interface. Requires resources to operate both channels.

Common errors

  • Thinking the platform is enough forever: Many business owners completely shut down their own website channels because they see the platform performing well. When the platform changes its algorithm, increases fees, or tightens regulations, there is no channel to rely on.
  • Creating a website without a reason for customers to visit: A standalone website is opened but left empty, with no content, no exclusive offers, and no different experience from the marketplace. The result is that customers still buy on the marketplace because it is more convenient.
  • Overextending resources: Running both the floor and the website while the team is not strong enough to support both. Both channels end up being half-hearted instead of one channel being done well.

The viewpoint of Sinh Vũ

Sinh Vũ creates a dedicated website as a channel for you to own customer relationships and tell the complete brand story. These are two things that a marketplace storefront will never allow you to fully accomplish, no matter how well you sell.

A platform for your customers today. A website for your customers next month and next year.

Practical experience of Sinh Vũ Studio

It does not mean abandoning the platform. A more practical approach is to run in parallel: a platform to reach customers in a buying mindset, a separate website to retain customers and gradually increase profit margins. However, if revenue and products are not yet mature, Sinh Vũ will state clearly that this is not the time to invest in this channel.

The tool brings back.

Frequently asked questions

I sell well on social media, can I do without a separate platform and website?

Yes, in the early stages. However, social media also carries similar risks as platforms: algorithms change, accounts can be locked, and you do not own the customer list. A private website is the only place where you retain all data and customer relationships without going through a third party.

Is having a dedicated website expensive and complicated?

Depending on the scale and objectives. A simple brand page can be more streamlined than you think. The bigger issue is not the cost of building the website but the operational costs: regular content, reasons for customers to choose to buy here instead of on marketplaces, and the person managing this channel. If you do not have resources for these three things yet, building a website may not be the most necessary step right now.

With high base fees, should I direct customers to buy directly on the website to maintain better profit margins?

This is a valid reason to have your own website, but it is not as simple as it sounds. Customers on platforms are buying for convenience, trust in the platform, and easy price comparisons. To persuade them to switch to your website, there needs to be a clear reason: exclusive offers, deeper content, or a better experience. Sinh Vũ advises calculating the actual platform fees on your orders first, then deciding whether it is worth investing in an additional channel.
