Many food brand owners start with the wrong question: "Does this packaging look good?" The correct question to ask first is: "What does my product fear?" Oxygen, moisture, light, or outside odors can all compromise quality before the expiration date. Good packaging material is what blocks exactly what the product needs to block, not necessarily the most expensive or beautiful material.

Three decisive questions before choosing materials

Sinh Vũ begins every food packaging project with three questions in the following order:

  • What is the product sensitive to? Oxygen oxidizes the fragrance in roasted coffee very quickly. Moisture softens cookies and salt crystallizes. Light alters the color of cold-pressed oils. Odors from the environment seep into ground spices. Identifying the right factors helps you know what level of barrier is needed.
  • Where is food contact safety? Any material that comes into direct contact with food must meet QCVN 12:2011/BYT from the Ministry of Health, with migration limits according to each type of material. If you are exporting, additional checks on the target market standards are necessary.
  • Which channel to sell through? Supermarket shelves need to withstand impacts and continuous lighting. E-commerce must endure multi-layered shipping. Gifts need to convey a sense of quality as soon as they are held. The sales channel directly affects the mechanical durability and presentation requirements of the packaging.

When to choose which direction

Multi-layer film with aluminum and gas release valve: designed for sensitive products like roasted coffee, spice powders, and fried snacks. The aluminum layer provides the best barrier against oxygen and light. The one-way valve allows CO₂ from roasted coffee to escape without letting oxygen in. Disadvantage: difficult to recycle due to the multi-layer structure that cannot be separated.

Material or paper unit: Suitable for less sensitive dry goods like packaged whole leaf tea, hard biscuits, and cereals. Lower cost, easier to recycle. If you have sustainability goals and the product allows, this is a direction to prioritize.

Glass or metal can: Suitable for beverages that require high barriers and a sense of quality. Glass is neutral in smell, reusable, but heavy and fragile. Aluminum cans are lighter, have good barriers, and are suitable for wide distribution.

Common errors to avoid

  • Using weak barriers for sensitive products: Choosing simple paper bags for specialty coffee and then wondering why the product loses its aroma after two weeks. This is the most costly mistake because it requires changing the structure midway.
  • Use premium laminated film for less sensitive dry goods: Wasting packaging budget unnecessarily, while creating additional waste that is hard to recycle. The barrier is higher than what the product needs, without improving quality or shelf life.
  • Ignoring safety compliance in design: The ink, coating, and inner adhesive layers must all be checked for compliance. This issue often arises during product launch or import inspection, at which point the cost of corrections is very high.
