Choose display materials: durable in the right places

When discussing materials for display spaces, the first question to ask should not be "which one looks best?" but rather: "Will customers touch this frequently, and how long do you intend to use it?" These two axes determine almost all material choices, and overlooking them is the most common reason display spaces look worn out after just a few months.

Two axes determine every choice

Before reviewing specific materials, you need to clarify two things.

• Touchpoint level: Areas where customers frequently interact, place orders, or lean (cashier counters, consultation desks, product shelves) need materials that are scratch-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. Areas meant only for viewing (photo backdrops, high display shelves) can prioritize aesthetics over durability.
• Desired lifespan: Shelves for a campaign lasting a few weeks and permanent shelves for many years require completely different materials and budgets. Clearly separating these two types from the planning stage helps you allocate your budget correctly.

Characteristics of each material group

There are four main groups commonly found for brand spaces in Vietnam.

• MDF with paint or veneer: MDF (medium-density fiberboard, made from wood fibers and synthetic resin) has a smooth, uniform surface, without visible wood grain, and is easy to paint flat and process into complex shapes or angles. It is suitable when you need a special shape or a smooth painted surface for low-interaction areas.
• Laminate surface: Laminate (a synthetic plastic layer pressed onto MDF or board) is more durable than regular paint, scratch-resistant, heat-resistant to some extent, and easy to clean. This is a reasonable choice for checkout counters, consultation counters, and high-touch shelves, with a significantly longer lifespan compared to paint.
• Metal (powder-coated steel or stainless steel): Provides a sturdy structural frame, a modern look, and high durability. Suitable for high-end positioning spaces or where a load-bearing frame is needed, with minimal maintenance.
• Acrylic (clear or colored sheets): Provides a minimalist, modern, or vibrant look depending on the color. A clear weakness: it scratches easily and can look old in high-touch areas if not cleaned properly. Acrylic is best suited for temporary display shelves, backdrops, or areas meant only for viewing.

Common mistakes when selecting materials

• Use mica for consultation or cashier counters because it looks good in reference photos, only to realize the surface is scratched and worn after a few months of heavy traffic.
• Creating a fixed shelf with temporary materials to save initially. The result: rapid deterioration, requiring a redo, and the total cost is higher than doing it right from the start.
• Choose heavy, difficult-to-dismantle shelves for spaces that need frequent layout changes by season or campaign. After one move, the problem becomes clear.
• Ignore daily maintenance factors: beautiful materials that are hard to clean or show fingerprints clearly in high-traffic areas will make the space look cluttered despite good design.

The right material is the one that suits how you use that space, not necessarily the most beautiful material in the catalog.

You should ask the construction workshop about material prices and compare at least two suppliers before making a decision, especially for projects with a fixed budget. It is advisable to create a real sample using the correct material before producing in quantity.
