Choose display materials: durable in the right places

Materials for brand shelves and counters should not be chosen based on beautiful photos, but based on the level of customer interaction and the duration you want to use.

Quick summary

Choose display materials based on two axes: customer interaction level (frequent touch or just for viewing) and desired lifespan (temporary shelves for campaigns or permanent shelves for many years). Areas with high customer interaction need laminate surfaces (durable scratch-resistant plastic coating) or metal; areas just for viewing can use acrylic or wood veneer (real wood layer adhered to the surface) for aesthetics. Clearly separating these two types from the start helps you allocate budget correctly and avoid early rework.

Quick comparison
You should choose this direction when
  • long-lasting touchpoint displays need to be durable and easy to clean
  • need a smooth surface for an attractive shape in low-impact areas
  • Display according to campaigns that accept changes after a short time.
Not needed when.
  • use acrylic at high-touch counters
  • build a fixed shelf with temporary materials

When discussing materials for display spaces, the first question Sinh Vũ always asks you is not "which type is the most beautiful?" but rather: "Will customers touch this often, and how long do you intend to use it?" These two axes determine almost the entire choice of materials, and overlooking them is the most common reason display spaces look worn out after just a few months.

Two axes determine every choice

Before looking at specific materials, you need to clearly identify two things.

  • Touchpoint level: Areas where customers frequently interact, place orders, or lean (cashier counters, consultation desks, product shelves) need materials that are scratch-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. Areas meant only for viewing (photo backdrops, high display shelves) can prioritize aesthetics over durability.
  • Desired lifespan: A campaign lasting a few weeks and a permanent display used for many years require completely different materials and budgets. Clearly separating these two types from the planning stage helps you allocate resources appropriately.

Characteristics of each material group

Sinh Vũ typically works with three main groups for brand space in Vietnam.

  • MDF wood covered with paint or veneer: MDF (medium-density fiberboard, pressed from wood fibers and synthetic resin) has a smooth, even surface without visible wood grain, easy to paint flat and shape into curves or complex angles. Suitable when you need a special shape or a smooth finish for areas with minimal wear.
  • Laminate surface coating: Laminate (a synthetic plastic layer pressed onto MDF or board) is more durable than regular paint, resistant to scratches, light heat, and easy to clean. This is a reasonable choice for checkout counters, consultation desks, and high-touch customer shelves. It costs more than paint but lasts significantly longer.
  • Metal (powder-coated steel or stainless steel): Provides a sturdy structure, a modern appearance, and high durability. Suitable for high-end positioning spaces or where a heavy-duty frame is required. Costs more than engineered wood but requires less maintenance.
  • Acrylic (clear or colored plastic sheets): Provides a minimalist, modern, or vibrant look depending on the color. Clear weaknesses: easily scratched, can look old in high-touch areas if not cleaned properly. Acrylic is best suited for short-term campaign displays, backdrops, or areas meant for viewing only.
Temporary display for the campaign: Prioritize colored acrylic, lightly painted MDF, or lightweight modular materials that are easy to assemble and disassemble. Accept changes after each campaign, no need for high investment. // Permanent display: Prioritize laminate-covered MDF or metal frames for high-traffic areas; wood veneer for aesthetic areas with less wear. Consider costs over the lifecycle, not just initial production costs.

Common mistakes when selecting materials

  • Use mica for consultation or cashier counters because it looks good in reference photos, only to realize the surface is scratched and worn after a few months of heavy traffic.
  • Creating a fixed shelf with temporary materials to save initially. The result: rapid deterioration, requiring a redo, and the total cost is higher than doing it right from the start.
  • Choose heavy, difficult-to-dismantle shelves for spaces that need frequent layout changes by season or campaign. After one move, the problem becomes clear.
  • Ignore daily maintenance factors: beautiful materials that are hard to clean or show fingerprints clearly in high-traffic areas will make the space look cluttered despite good design.

The right material is the one that suits how you use that space, not necessarily the most beautiful material in the catalog.

Practical experience, Sinh Vũ Studio

The viewpoint of Sinh Vũ

In Sinh Vũ's working process, the desired touchpoints and lifespan are determined before suggesting materials, then a clear list of materials is separated for high-contact areas and areas meant only for viewing. The design is delivered with material specifications and specific finishing requirements for the interior construction unit to execute correctly. Sinh Vũ acts as the creative director coordinating with the construction workshop, not directly executing and not quoting material costs as that falls under the workshop's market-based pricing.

You should ask the construction workshop about material prices and compare at least two suppliers before deciding, especially for projects with a fixed budget.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MDF and regular plywood when used for display shelves?

MDF (medium-density fiberboard, pressed from wood fibers and glue) has a smooth, even surface without visible wood grain, making it easy to paint flat and create complex curves. Regular plywood sometimes has a surface that is not smooth enough for glossy paint. For display shelves that require a smooth paint finish or beautiful veneer, MDF is the more popular choice.

Is acrylic suitable for checkout counters or consultation desks?

Acrylic provides a modern and vibrant look, but its weakness is that it scratches over time, especially in high-contact areas like checkout counters. After a short period, the surface of acrylic can appear worn if not cleaned properly. Sinh Vũ often recommends using acrylic for display shelves in short-term campaigns, while counters for long-term use should prioritize laminate or metal.
