ESG is infiltrating supply chains and customer expectations, making it difficult for even small businesses to remain outside.
ESG (environmental, social, governance) was once seen as a corporate issue, but now it also affects small and medium enterprises through three channels: requirements from large partners in the supply chain, legal obligations like packaging recycling responsibilities, and customer expectations. For small businesses, it’s not necessary to do everything, but to choose a few actions that align with the industry and execute them honestly. Overstating can be more harmful than saying nothing.
Many small business owners think ESG is a luxury for large companies. This is changing, and understanding it early helps you be proactive rather than reactive.
ESG stands for environment, social, and governance. For small businesses, it’s not a lengthy report, but rather a few practical questions: how do products and packaging impact the environment, how are workers and communities treated, and is the management transparent? These are aspects that customers and partners are increasingly paying attention to.
ESG impacts small businesses through three channels. First is the supply chain: when selling to large partners or exporting, they may require standards regarding materials and labor. Second is legal: for example, the extended producer responsibility for packaging that has come into effect in Vietnam. Third is customer expectations, especially among younger and urban groups.
Small businesses do not need to and should not do everything at once. Choose a few tasks that truly align with your industry, can be accomplished, and can be communicated honestly, rather than slapping green labels everywhere with nothing behind them. Doing less but authentically builds trust; doing more but hollow is counterproductive.

The 2020 Environmental Protection Law and Decree 08/2022/ND-CP on the extended producer responsibility in Vietnam (effective from January 1, 2024). This information is for reference only and does not replace legal advice.
At a manageable level, it should be done. No need for expensive reports or certifications, but it is important to understand the legal obligations related to you (such as packaging responsibility) and choose a few responsibilities that align with the industry. Start small and it is more important than going big and fake.
Not automatic, and ESG should not be done just for sales. However, when done genuinely and appropriately, it helps build trust and opens doors with clients and partners who value that. Faking it for sales carries greater risks than benefits.
