Before placing any text or color on the box, the die-cut has determined whether the box can take shape.

The die-cut is not a technical detail for the workshop to handle. It is the point where every design decision, material, and machinery converge into a single physical object. A mistake here means the entire print batch is ruined.

What is a dieline?

The die cut consists of two types of steel blades mounted on a plywood base: cutting blades (cut) that separate the box shape from the paper, and crease blades that create folds so the box can be properly assembled. The die is pressed down onto the printed sheet with great force, so if the blades are misaligned even slightly, the cutting and folding lines will not match, resulting in a box that cannot be assembled or is misshapen.

Before having a physical mold, a dieline (digital drawing of cut lines, crease lines, adhesive areas, and bleed) must be created. The dieline serves as the basis for placing graphics, checking structure, and processing the mold. Without a proper dieline, there is nothing to work from.

Factors that determine whether the mold can run

  • Grain direction: The grain must run parallel to the main crease line. If it runs against the grain, the fold will crack or the coating will peel, especially with thick paper and coated paper.
  • Weight and paper thickness (caliper): thicker paper requires deeper creasing, and the edge tolerance varies accordingly. The die used for this type of paper cannot be used as-is for other types of paper.
  • Cutting tolerance: To ensure boxes pass through automatic sealing machines without jamming, the cutting lines need to achieve a certain level of precision. The specific number depends on the sealing machines of each workshop; you should ask the partner workshop directly instead of applying a common figure.
  • Drawing conventions on the dieline: Solid lines indicate cut lines, dashed lines indicate fold lines, and dotted lines indicate perforation. Adhesive and perforation areas should be separated or color-coded to avoid confusion for the workshop.

When to invest in molds, when not to

Create a steel mold: Suitable when the quantity is large enough to allocate mold costs to a reasonable level, when boxes passing through an automatic labeling machine require high precision, or when the box shape will be reused across multiple print runs. At this point, the mold is an asset to be reused, not a one-time cost.

Digital cutting: suitable for small quantities, when testing the market without finalizing the design, or when needing quick samples to check structure before committing to molds. No mold-making costs are needed, but the speed and cost per product are higher in larger quantities.

Common errors with die-cutting

  • Using the dieline sample of a different product immediately without checking the dimensions according to the materials and machinery of the current factory.
  • Position important text or graphic details right on the fold line: when the box is folded, the line will break or distort.
  • Do not leave bleed over the fold line; when assembling the box, white paper edges may be exposed at the corners and edges.
  • Bypassing the paper grain direction when ordering materials leads to creasing across the entire batch.
  • Reuse an old mold for new material with a different thickness without adjusting the depth of the cut.

A dieline is the original design for the production stage, not just a graphic accessory. It serves as the basis for placing graphics, checking structure, and running machines.

What is the difference between a dieline and a die?

Can the text or logo be placed near the fold line?
