LED has almost completely replaced neon and fluorescent lights in signage because it is more durable, cooler, and easier to conceal. There are three main lighting styles: face-lit, halo/backlit, and lightbox, each creating entirely different letter structures and construction costs. The lighting style must be decided before choosing materials and the fabrication shop.

LED is the default for modern signage, and that needs no further discussion. The real question you need to answer is: what type of lighting? This decision determines the entire letter structure, box depth, how to conceal the power source, and ultimately the brand's feel at night.
Three basic types of lighting basic
According to the USSC Foundation framework, there are three ways to illuminate signs at night using LED:
Face-lit letters: lights are inside the letter box, shining through the acrylic or polycarbonate face. The highest brightness, visible from afar, suitable for large street front signs.
Halo or backlit: letters stand a distance from the wall, LED lights shine behind creating a halo around the letters on the wall. A subtle, luxurious effect that works best with dark background walls.
Lightbox: The entire face of the sign is a flat, evenly lit panel, commonly used indoors in lobbies, large directional signs, or commercial facades.
Choose the projection style first, as changing it after the workshop has cut and welded the frame is very costly.
Face-lit compared to halo-lit: Face-lit is stronger in attracting attention from a distance, suitable for brands that require clarity and recognizability. Halo-lit creates depth and a more premium feel, but requires the background wall and installation distance to be correct for optimal appearance. There is no absolutely better style, only which style fits the brand personality better.
Factors that determine the quality of light
Good LED is just a necessary condition. The sufficient condition lies in the following four factors:
Depth of the letterbox (return): If the box is too shallow, the light may penetrate the acrylic before it has a chance to diffuse, causing uneven bright spots. The depth must be sufficient for the light from the modules to blend before reaching the letters.
Module density and spacing: if spaced too far apart, each bright dot is clearly visible; if too close, it becomes hot and consumes more power. A good workshop will calculate module spacing based on box depth and type of acrylic.
Color temperature: warm white creates a friendly feeling, while cool white appears more robust and modern. Avoid mixing color temperatures between revisions; having some warm and some cool looks very amateur.
Power source and waterproof rating: outdoor signs must have the power supply placed in a waterproof-rated box, using low voltage Class 2 power (low voltage safety supply, reducing the risk of electric shock and short circuits). This is a safety requirement, not an option.
When to choose which direction
Choose bright lighting when the sign is placed on a major street, needs to be visible from a distance, and the brand requires clarity and strength.
Choose wall-mounted edge lighting when you want a subtle effect, with a dark background, in a space leaning towards luxury or premium.
Choose a sealed light box when a flat, even bright surface is needed over a large area, typically indoors or on commercial facades.
Increase the depth of the box and the density of the module when the acrylic face is installed but still shows clear dots or bright streaks.
Place the source in a separate waterproof box when exposed to direct rain and sunlight.
Electric signs must comply with UL 48 standards (safety standards for electric signs). When installed outdoors or in damp areas, the power source must be placed in a waterproof channel or box, and a low voltage Class 2 power supply should be used.

Common errors during implementation
Using unbranded LED lights: after a few months, sections fail, the surface looks uneven, and it costs more to fix than to redo.
Shallow letter box, loose module: the acrylic face shows streaks of light, looking like a makeshift installation.
Mixing color temperatures between revisions: warm whites, cool whites, old and new signs not blending.
The power source that is not waterproof: exposure to rain can cause short circuits, posing a fire risk and potentially losing the entire lighting system.
Do not leave maintenance access; if one module fails, the entire sign must be disassembled, turning a small repair cost into a large one.
