Flood UV and spot UV both use UV-curable solutions, but their goals are completely different. One provides overall protection. The other directs attention to specific areas. Choosing incorrectly not only costs more but also results in a product that fails to achieve its purpose.

Two techniques, two goals

Flood UV applies a coating solution over the entire printed surface. The result is an even glossy layer that protects the ink from scratches and moisture, extending the lifespan of the printed material. Since it does not require a separate plate or die, the cost is lower, making it suitable for magazine covers, commercial flyers, and ordinary consumer product boxes.

Spot UV only applies gloss to selected areas: logo, product name, main image. The rest of the printed surface remains unchanged, usually a matte background. The result is a contrast between gloss and matte, drawing the viewer's eye directly to that point. This is a finishing technique, not a protective one.

When to choose which direction

Choose spot UV when you want to draw viewers' attention to the logo, brand name, or product image. It is most effective when combined with a matte lamination on the entire background, followed by spot UV on the highlighted areas. The contrast of gloss on matte creates a clear premium feel, and this method is very popular in high-end cosmetics and food packaging.

If the printed materials are folded, such as boxes, envelopes, or paper bags, careful consideration should be given to the UV placement. A hard UV layer can crack at the folds if a safe distance isn't maintained.

This is a point that many clients overlook and which can ruin the print. The negative space must meet three conditions:

  • Draw in vector, not using raster images, to ensure sharp edges when printed.
  • Separate into distinct layers in the file, assign spot colors (special mix colors, often named "Spot UV" or according to the printer's convention).
  • Enable overprint for that layer to avoid being knocked out (removing the underlying background) when the printer processes the RIP file (the process of separating the printing plate to produce the print).

Missing one of the three, the printer will either reject the file, print the coverage in the wrong position, or lose the background color beneath the spot UV area.

Common mistakes

  • Set spot UV too close to the fold or cut edge: the hard coating gets pulled when folded and cracks into a white line.
  • Do not enable overprint: the background is knocked out, and the spot UV area becomes a white box instead of a gloss on color.
  • Use raster instead of vector for the coverage area: blurred edges, poor print quality.
  • Expecting spot UV on a glossy background for strong contrast: two glossy areas that are almost identical, causing the effect to disappear.
  • Not considering the paper grain direction relative to the fold: UV cracking along the fold line even with a margin left.

The principle of maintaining a safe distance of at least 1.5 to 3 mm between the UV area and the fold or cut edge. It should be confirmed on a real print sample before running the batch.
