  • Durability requirements. UV ink adheres well for higher scratch resistance and fade resistance compared to standard printing.

Choose UV flat printing when: printing directly on signs, nameplates, booth details, or corporate gifts on flat rigid materials. Small to medium batches. Many different design codes. Quick delivery is needed. Do not want to add an extra decal layer.

Do not choose when: The surface is curved, uneven, or irregular. Need to print on soft roll film in large quantities (that direction belongs to flexo or gravure). Need a large stable Pantone background color like offset. Or when the surface material's ink adhesion is not determined.

The surface issue cannot be overlooked

This is a point that many people overlook, leading to product failures. UV ink does not adhere uniformly to all materials. Surface energy (the ability of a material to 'hold' liquid rather than repel it) determines whether the ink will adhere. Some materials require a primer before printing. Others need to be thoroughly cleaned to remove oil or dust.

  • Printing on uneven surfaces: Small details on wood with a raised grain, lightly rounded edges. The print head cannot maintain an even distance, resulting in misaligned or blurred prints.
  • Skip the primer: ink adheres, but two days later it peels off in patches on difficult-to-adhere materials like smooth glass or coated metal.
  • Use UV flat printing for very large roll production: Flatbed machines are not suitable for this, as productivity and costs will not be competitive.
  • Do not check samples on-site: colors on the screen and actual printed colors on materials can differ. For identity implementation, checking samples on-site is mandatory.
