A beautiful image on screen can still come out flawed, blurry, or color-shifted due to three things: insufficient dpi, incorrect format, and wrong color space.
Printed images need an effective resolution of about 300 ppi calculated at the actual print size, not the original size on the device. The file sent to the workshop should be PDF/X, with logos and text in vector format, and the color mode must be CMYK. These three factors determine whether the file can be printed, and there is no way to fix it after placing the wrong images in the layout.
Resolution and file format are two factors that determine whether the print can be used. Both must be correct from the design stage, because once the file goes into the printer, there is no way to salvage images lacking data or colors that have been automatically converted by the workshop.
Commercial offset printing uses a standard mesh printing technique with a resolution of about 150 lpi (lines per inch). To avoid errors in the mesh dots, the input image data needs to be double that number, approximately 300 ppi (pixels per inch). This is a technical rule of the image processing equipment in the printer, not a number set by the designer.
The safety margin according to practice is from 1.5 to 2 times the mesh resolution, which is about 225 to 300 ppi. Portrait or close-up product images should maintain at least 300 ppi. Background images or objects without sharp details can accept a lower resolution.
What many people misunderstand: dpi is calculated at the size set in the layout, not the original size of the image. If you have an image that is 3,000 pixels wide but place it in a layout and enlarge it to a size of 1 meter, the effective dpi drops very low, enough to produce a print that is pixelated.
The quick check in design software: check the "effective resolution" at the exact position of the image in the layout. If that number is below the threshold, there are only two options: reduce the print area or replace the image with a higher resolution one.
Bitmap images (JPG, PNG, TIFF): suitable for photographs, product images, and backgrounds with gradients. Print size is limited by the original resolution. Enlarging beyond the threshold will result in pixelation.
Vector graphics (AI, EPS, SVG): suitable for logos, text, outlines, barcodes, and geometric shapes. Crisp at any size, never pixelated when enlarged. This is the required format for the brand identity system.
Bitmap logos are the most common mistake Sinh Vũ encounters when receiving briefs from clients. When printed large, the logo's edges become jagged, and there is no way to adjust it in post-production. The only solution is to recreate it as a vector from scratch.
The file delivered to the printing house should be in PDF/X-4 or PDF/X-1a format. This is a PDF standard specifically for the printing industry, retaining all information about color modes, fonts, and crop marks. The printing house receiving this file does not need to guess any additional specifications.
Regarding color systems: screens use RGB (Red, Green, Blue), while printers use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key black). These two systems do not convert 1:1. If you provide an RGB file, the workshop will automatically convert it to CMYK based on their machine configuration, resulting in colors that are completely out of control. For the brand's specific colors, you need to declare the Pantone codes for the workshop to mix the inks correctly.
Resolution and color mode determine whether the file can be printed. This should be addressed right from the design stage, not revealed in the printing room.

The file size is not sufficient. What the workshop needs is effective resolution at the actual print size. If you have a 3000 pixel image but place it in a layout and enlarge it to A0 size, the effective dpi may drop below 100 ppi, which is enough to produce a print that is pixelated and blurry.
