Two main integration directions

All types of paper box assembly revolve around two mechanisms: adhesive and mechanical locking.

  • Adhesive application (seam adhesive, pre-glued bottom): Adhesive bonds two paper surfaces together or glues the bottom of the finished box directly at the workshop. The box arrives ready for you to use or can be easily assembled.
  • Mechanical lock (clip, snap lock, no glue needed): Paper tabs are designed to clip together. The box is delivered flat, and customers or staff can assemble it on-site. No glue or tape is required.
Adhesive application: stronger for heavier products, quick assembly if the bottom is pre-glued, but it depends on the quality of the bond and the adhesive area must be left open.
Mechanical lock: Flexible for manual assembly, no worries about visible glue marks, but not suitable for heavy products as mechanical clips bear less weight than properly adhered glue.

The number of adhesive points affects speed and cost

One point to understand when working with the factory: the more adhesive points there are, the slower the folder-gluer machine (the machine that automatically folds and glues boxes) runs, and the higher the processing costs.

  • Vertical seam on a sticker: The fastest option, suitable for high volume and light to medium boxes.
  • Automatic bottom with three adhesive points: Slower, but the bottom opens immediately when set up, saving time on packaging later.
  • Bottom lock: You need to prepare bait carefully before running the machine, at the latest among the three types, but no glue is required, thus avoiding the risk of adhesive contamination.

There is no single best style. The best style is the one that fits the product's volume, weight, and your box construction.

The adhesive area must be left flat

This is the point that is most prone to error and can have the most severe consequences because the mistakes do not become apparent immediately; they only show up when the box is under stress.

When the surface of the box is laminated or has spot UV coating, the film and UV create a non-absorbent smooth surface. If this area overlaps with the adhesive area, the glue cannot adhere to the paper, resulting in a weak bond that can easily come apart. The dieline must leave a sufficiently wide area of exposed paper for the glue to make direct contact with the paper surface.

The adhesive area needs to be a flat surface for the glue to stick. If lamination or UV coating spills into the adhesive area, the bond weakens and is prone to failure. The dieline must clearly leave the adhesive area.
