However, the strengths of each machine are completely different, and choosing the wrong technology can lead to poor edges, misaligned sizes, or damaged materials.

The operational principle: peeler or ray of light

The CNC router machine uses a high-speed rotating bit, moving along three axes to cut, mill, and carve materials. Because it uses mechanical force, CNC can handle thick and hard materials: solid aluminum, aluminum composite panels (ACM), thick acrylic, wood, formex. More importantly, CNC can create three-dimensional shapes: carving recesses, milling grooves, engraving, and creating recessed letters. This is something laser cannot achieve.

Laser cutting machines project high-intensity light to melt or vaporize material along the design line. Since there is no mechanical contact force, the laser provides a glossy edge on acrylic as soon as it is cut, eliminating the need for further polishing. CO2 lasers (commonly used in sign shops) are powerful with non-metal materials: acrylic, wood, foam, leather, and fabric. Fiber lasers can now cut thin metals.

When to choose CNC, when to choose laser

Choose CNC when:

  • Thick, hard materials: solid aluminum, ACM sheets, thick acrylic, wood
  • Need to create three-dimensional shapes: hollow letters, grooves, recessed boxes, embossed letters.
  • Create a base structure; the frame needs to be sturdy.
  • Cut aluminum composite sheets for the signage.

Select laser when:

  • Cut thin to medium acrylic letters, requiring an inner shadow edge.
  • Small details, complex cuts, and high quantities require speed.
  • Want to achieve completion without needing to polish afterwards.
  • Cut thin metal sheets: must be fiber laser, not CO2.

Many professional workshops invest in both machines: CNC for structural and three-dimensional work, and laser for quick and smooth acrylic cutting. Choosing machines should be based on the job, not on trends.

Common mistakes when ordering construction

  • Expect CO2 laser to cut aluminum or stainless steel. CO2 lasers do not cut metal. To cut metal with a laser, fiber lasers must be used, which are completely different equipment. If the workshop says "laser cuts aluminum" without specifying the type of machine, ask for clarification.
  • Use thick acrylic cut by CNC and then be surprised by the frosted edges. CNC cuts acrylic to create frosted edges because the blade shaves rather than melts. To achieve clear edges, you need to add a polishing step, which means additional costs and time.
  • Select the machine first, then choose the materials. The correct order is the opposite: determine the materials and finishing requirements first, then select the appropriate cutting technology.
  • No accounting for kerf width: Each machine has a different kerf width. If the design file does not account for this, the piece details will be incorrectly sized after cutting.
  • Laser cutting PVC. Some plastics, including PVC, emit toxic gases when cut with a laser. Be sure to ask the workshop for a list of approved materials before placing an order.
