These two concepts appear in every professional print file but are rarely explained clearly for newcomers working with the studio. As a result, errors only become apparent after trimming, at which point they cannot be fixed and must be reprinted. What is bleed and why is it mandatory?

Industrial cutting machines do not cut each sheet with absolute precision. There is a small tolerance, and when designing the color to stop at the cut line, that tolerance is enough to expose a strip of white paper along the edge of the product. Bleed solves this issue by extending the background beyond the cut line enough for the cutting machine to deviate without revealing paper.

The common standard is 3mm on each edge for medium and small formats. Large formats may require more depending on the workshop. Sinh Vũ takes this specification from the actual machine of the printing partner, not using the default numbers from the software.

Along with the bleed is the safe area: the space inside the cut line for placing text and important details. Content should be kept at least 3mm away from the cut line to avoid being trimmed. If you see a design with a logo or text too close to the edge, that is a real risk.

Overprint and knockout: when to use which approach

In professional offset and digital printing, each color is printed in separate layers. When two colors overlap, the software defaults to knocking out the lower layer where the upper layer prints over it, known as knockout. If the two color prints are misaligned even slightly, a white edge will appear around the detail.

Overprint solves that problem by eliminating the hollowing step: colors are printed directly on top of each other, blending two colors to create a new one. This is beneficial for fine black text or thin lines on a colored background, as even if the colors misalign, there will be no white gaps.

Knockout: The underlying layer is hollowed out where the upper layer occupies. Used for bright color details over dark backgrounds to maintain the original color. If the color overlaps misaligns, thin edges may appear.

Common mistakes when skipping these two steps

  • Do not leave bleed; after trimming, white edges may show along the product's sides, requiring a complete reprint.
  • Set overprint incorrectly for light colors on dark backgrounds, resulting in muddy colors and details that look completely wrong compared to the design on screen.
  • The white area accidentally enabling overprint will completely disappear when printed because the white blends into the background.
  • Position text close to the cut line, not maintaining the safe zone, resulting in cut-off or swallowed text after trimming.
  • Only check the color on a regular screen, without enabling the overprint preview mode, delivering the file without knowing the hidden errors within.

Frequently asked questions

If the design does not have a bleed that extends to the edge, is bleed still necessary?

If all edges are white or a uniform color that does not touch the cut edge, the bleed technique is less important. However, if the design has a background color or image that touches any edge, it is mandatory to leave a bleed of at least 3mm on that edge. In fact, Sinh Vũ recommends leaving a bleed on all edges from the start to avoid forgetting when the design changes.

How can you tell if the file is incorrectly set to overprint without sending a test to the print shop?

In Adobe Illustrator and InDesign, you go to View, enable Overprint Preview to see the actual colors that will appear in print, not the colors displayed on the screen. If you notice bright areas darkening or white text disappearing, that indicates overprint is mistakenly enabled. Checking this step before exporting the PDF for the printer is a mandatory habit in Sinh Vũ's process.
