Why measure by the accents

A cap-height frame is not enough for Vietnamese

Sinh Vũ doctrine, article 9.02: a logo's line spacing and fixed lettering must be measured from the highest stacked accent and the lowest below-line mark.

  • Accents eat into clear space

If clear space is measured from the top of the capitals, stacked accents have already taken part of it. Placed next to other things, the logo is tighter than drawn.

  • Two lines, and accents touch descenders

Line spacing set for unaccented text makes the lower line's accents touch the g, y and p of the line above.

  • At small sizes, hook and tilde look alike

On avatars, stamps and small packaging, the hook (hỏi) and tilde (ngã) marks merge into a dot. Names carrying them are easily misread.

Questions

What people often ask

Three questions Sinh Vũ often gets about this tool.

Does the tool draw a logo for me?

No. It only sets the name in an existing typeface to measure the accents. A real wordmark needs every stroke redrawn, accents above all, to suit the brand.

Is my font sent anywhere?

No. The font file is read in your browser and is not uploaded to any server.

Should I drop the accents to keep the name simple?

Dropping the accents drops part of the meaning. Only do it for a clear reason, such as selling abroad, and define once where the unaccented version is used.
