Why plan codes from the start

Ad hoc numbering confuses stock and tills

A code register is the smallest framework a product range has. Set it up properly once and product one hundred still fits neatly, with nobody in the warehouse or at the till left guessing.

  • One code for two products

If jasmine and lotus share a code, the till charges one price and the warehouse counts one item. Every flavour or size a shopper can tell apart needs its own code.

  • No room left for new products

Number at random, then add a line, and that line's codes end up scattered everywhere. Reserve a block per line from day one and every new product sits next to its family.

  • Reusing an old code

Retailers and marketplaces still hold the data for an old code. Give it to a new product and the till shows the wrong name and price. Keep discontinued codes in the register, untouched.

Questions

What people often ask

Three questions Sinh Vũ often gets about this tool.

How many product codes does one registration give me?

A business does not buy product codes one by one; it registers a company prefix. The shorter the prefix, the more products it can number: a 10-digit prefix (counting 893) covers 100 products, 9 digits 1,000, 8 digits 10,000, 7 digits 100,000. The prefix type is shown on your barcode usage right.

Do I need a new code when I redesign the pack?

No, as long as the contents stay the same: same variant, same weight, same count. Change the weight, the flavour or the number of pieces and you need a new code. Large retailers may have their own rules, so check with their buying team before changing.

Can two companies with the same owner share a prefix?

No. A company prefix is issued to the organisation or person registered for it. Two brands within one company can share it, each with its own block of numbers; two separate companies each register their own.

How is a stock code different from a barcode number?

The barcode number is read by scanners and shared with retailers and marketplaces. A stock code is an internal code with letters, so warehouse staff can tell the item at a glance, for example TX01-LA-25TUI. The tool builds both; edit stock codes freely in the register, but keep declared barcode numbers unchanged.
