Choose printing materials: durable and vibrant colors
The question is not 'which material is the most beautiful' but 'which material is right for your context'.
There are no absolutely best materials, only materials that are right for the context. Decisions are based on three core factors: usage time, indoor or outdoor location, and weather conditions at the installation site. Once these three factors are determined, the list of materials will narrow down to one or two truly suitable options.

The same design file printed on vinyl will feel completely different than printed on fabric, and colors on backlit vinyl will look entirely different than under regular light. Choosing a material is a design decision, not a final purchasing task.
Three fundamental factors before discussing aesthetics
Before comparing any materials, you need to answer these three questions:
- Usage time: Is it for a single event, a campaign season, or displayed outdoors for several months?
- Location: indoors with controlled lighting, or outdoors exposed to sun, rain, and wind?
- Typical weather conditions: Intense UV sunlight, heavy rain, or an open area with strong winds?
Once you identify those three factors, the list of materials will naturally narrow down to one or two truly suitable options. The remaining considerations will be balancing color intensity, texture, weight, and cost.
Four common material groups and when to use
Mesh tarpaulin: The surface has small holes for wind to pass through. It is essential to use in open, windy areas, for large outdoor backdrops and banners, and for construction site fencing. Using a solid tarpaulin in windy locations can cause it to act like a sail, posing risks to the structure and surrounding people.
Backlit tarpaulin: Only used for light boxes and backlit applications. The colors appear much more vibrant and deeper when illuminated from behind compared to direct viewing. Using regular materials for backlit positions will result in dark and dull colors, failing to achieve the desired effect.
Fabric: Provides a soft, luxurious feel, low reflectivity, suitable for backdrops and booths in the premium brand segment. Easy to fold, lighter than tarpaulin, convenient for transport. Not the optimal choice for long-term outdoor use as it is less resistant to rain and sun compared to tarpaulin with a protective layer.
Common mistakes when selecting materials
- Using tarps to cover large outdoor surfaces in windy conditions. This is the riskiest mistake, potentially damaging the project and posing safety hazards.
- Choose the cheapest materials for items that will hang outdoors for several months. After a few weeks, they will fade and tear, and the replacement and rework costs will be much higher than choosing the right materials from the start.
- Ignore lighting factors. Using common materials for backlit sign boxes will result in completely incorrect color outcomes.
- Not considering weight and hanging methods when selecting large materials. It’s only on-site that you realize it’s too heavy or the structure can’t support it.
- Choose based on texture while forgetting about weather resistance for outdoor items. Beautiful fabric indoors, but what happens after a rainstorm?
