FSC is a verified certification, not a self-applied label. Understand it correctly to avoid misuse and choose the right printing partner.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is a certification that paper and board in packaging come from responsibly managed forests and are traceable throughout the supply chain from forest to finished product. There are three labels to distinguish: FSC 100%, FSC Recycled, and FSC Mix, each indicating different sources. The FSC logo can only be printed validly when the printer also has chain of custody certification, which is a constraint in choosing a printing house, not just a design decision.
When clients bring packaging designs to the printing house and ask, "Can we print the FSC logo?", the answer does not lie in the design file. It lies in the printer's certification. This is a point many brands overlook, leading to the use of invalid labels, which poses legal and reputational risks.
FSC does not have a single label. There are three types, and each indicates something different about the source of the materials:
A common misunderstanding is equating FSC Mix with "recycled paper." This is not the case. FSC Mix may contain no recycled material at all if it comes entirely from FSC forests and controlled wood.
FSC operates on the principle of chain of custody, meaning materials must be continuously traceable from forest to finished product, without mixing in unclear source materials at any step.
The practical consequence: every link in the supply chain must have certification. This includes the printing house that prints packaging for you. If the printing house is not certified in the chain of custody, you cannot print the FSC logo on the final product, even if the input paper is sourced from a compliant supplier.
The FSC label on the finished product indicates that the materials have met the requirements of the supply chain at every step, from source to distribution.
FSC and REI Expert Advice
To verify, request the printer to provide the FSC certification number and check directly on the public database of FSC. This is not something Sinh Vũ does on behalf of others, as Sinh Vũ is a creative director, not a certifying organization. However, Sinh Vũ supports connecting with certified partner printing houses when clients need.
This is the second most common misunderstanding. FSC certifies the source of input materials, not that the finished product is recyclable or biodegradable after use. A box made of 100% FSC material may still not be recyclable if it is coated with plastic or printed with UV ink. These two stories are independent of each other.
The decision of whether to pursue FSC certification begins with a question about the distribution channel, not from the desire to "look greener."

First, confirm that the printing house you are using has FSC chain of custody certification. If the printing house does not have this, the printed logo is invalid even if the input paper meets standards. The next step is to ask the printing house for the certification number, and you can directly verify it on the FSC database.
Not entirely. FSC Mix means the materials in the product come from at least one of three sources: FSC-certified materials, recycled materials, or wood controlled according to FSC standards. If you want to emphasize the recycling message clearly, the more appropriate label is FSC Recycled, as all materials must then come from post-consumer or post-production recycled paper.
Not mandatory. FSC is only valuable when the end market, retailer, or importing partner requires it. If you are a small domestic seller and the market does not demand this label, the costs and time to enter the FSC chain may not be clearly profitable. Sinh Vũ often clarifies the distribution channel before advising whether to pursue certification.
