When a business decides to "make greener packaging," the first step is often to find new materials: paper instead of plastic, biodegradable boxes instead of regular boxes.   • Green materials: Only at this stage should we discuss PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastics, bioplastics, or uncoated paper-based materials. Even here, each option still needs to be verified under specific conditions.

Factors to check before selecting materials

Before you sit down to choose materials, you need to answer four questions:

  • How sensitive is the product inside to moisture, light, and oxygen? Poor protection leading to spoilage before the expiration date is a greater waste than the packaging.
  • At the point of sale, where do buyers actually dispose of packaging after use? General trash, separate recycling, or return to a collection point?
  • Does the recycling or composting infrastructure in that market handle the materials intended for use?
  • What is the cost difference and the stable supply capability of that material in Vietnam?

There is no answer to these four questions; every material decision is a guess.

When to choose which direction

Prioritize reducing materials when the packaging is using excess layers, excess internal space, or the structure can be simplified without compromising protection. This is often the most suitable starting point for businesses in the early stages.

Prioritize using PCR recycled materials when you have reduced volume, a stable supply of PCR, and product contact standards allow it. Do not use PCR for food contact packaging unless testing has been confirmed.

Postpone biodegradable materials until it is confirmed that the sales location has industrial composting infrastructure or separate collection. If not, this material ends up in the landfill and does not provide any benefits compared to regular plastic.

  • Jumping straight into biodegradable materials while skipping the step of reducing volume increases costs without changing the actual impact.
  • Switching to moisture-resistant coated paper and thinking it is greener than plastic. The coating often prevents the paper from entering the regular recycling stream.

Not always the case. Coated paper or moisture-resistant paper is often harder to recycle than regular virgin plastic, as recycling plants must separate the layers before processing. Is biodegradable packaging suitable for the Vietnamese market?
